What we do for Authors, in a nutshell:
1. We create an unique QR code, one that is trackable, that can be placed/posted on Everything (online, printed, etc.). People with smart phones scan them and they are instantly connected to a mobile site.
2. We design and host a Mobile Website, one that serves up the best user experience based on the phone in use. This Mobile Website can we seen on ANY smart phone, and can host the books image, the author's image, the contact information, ways to buy the book, more information about the author and the book, a way to "click-to-call", we can insert a Google map to find a book signing event, a RSS feed, so its always current, links to all their social sites to get connected even more, a way to send a message to the author (or assistant) for more information with check boxes and radio buttons, etc.... all kinds of good stuff!
3. We also create a custom keyword (ie: Text Author to 69302) and a we generate another QR that actually opens up the user's SMS/Text message, fills in the keyword for them! When the user hits SEND, they are entered into your mobile database. Now these raving fans get personal messages from the author, inviting them to book signing events, paid seminars, and mobile coupons to bring a friend! These are people that gave the author or publisher Permission to communicate to them on the most personal device that is always on them 24/7!
4.
